NFL icon Tom Brady is close friends with England captain Harry Kane and has now given his verdict after the forward decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur in search of trophies.
Harry Kane’s blockbuster move from Tottenham to Bayern Munich has received the seal of approval from NFL great Tom Brady.
The former New England Patriots icon is a close friend of the England captain, who recently completed his move to the Bundesliga giants. After 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs, the 30-year-old decided to depart his boyhood club in search of trophies.
However, his switch to Germany did mean that a proposed meeting with his good pal Brady had to be shelved. The seven-time Super Bowl victor visited the UK to see Birmingham in action at St Andrews for the first time since he was named as a minority shareholder at the club.
Showing understanding following the impromptu change in plans, the 46-year-old spoke of his happiness for his friend after his move. Speaking to Sky Sports News, Brady said: “Harry’s been a friend of mine for a while. We were supposed to meet Monday morning and then the plans changed quickly.”
“But I’m very excited for him. He was part of a great club in Tottenham, and he’s going to another great club. And I think he wanted to compete in those Champions League, and he’s gonna get a chance to do that.”
Kane is a massive American football enthusiast, and the pair struck up a friendship after an exchange with the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers talisman on Instagram. The retired three-time NFL MVP liked a snap posted by the Three Lions ace, before Kane struck up a conversation with his idol via his DMs.
The new chairman of Birmingham’s advisory board added: “He was part of a great club in Tottenham, and he’s going to another great club. And I think he wanted to compete in those Champions League, and he’s gonna get a chance to do that.”
In many ways, Brady will be able to sympathize with his friend – who is departing Spurs after a decade in the first team. The former quarterback left the Patriots after 20 years of service, shocking his sport by signing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The superstar striker has admitted that it was a difficult decision to leave the club he has played for since the age of 11. That said, the marksman – who has cost Bayern Munich £100m – is relishing the opportunity to compete for the club game’s biggest prizes at the Allianz Arena.
At a press conference, he told reporters: “It was always going to be a tough decision. Tottenham is a club connected with my heart. But I want to win titles and felt this was the right time.”
The England all-time record goalscorer made his debut for the German champions in the Super Cup defeat versus RB Leipzig. He will hope to put that defeat behind him on what is likely to be his league bow versus Werder Bremen on August 18.
