Last week, Brady was the second high-profile celebrity customer, after John Mayer, for Rolex’s Emoji watch.
Tom Brady flew across the Atlantic Ocean to see Birmingham City FC play last weekend. These are words I never imagined I’d read or hear.
No one who didn’t grow up in a football-crazed English family in the 1990s, as I did, would fully get the cultural significance of the name “Birmingham City FC.” However, the acquisition of a minority stake in the club might usher in a flurry of fresh Premier League activity this season. And while Brady’s purchase of the second division team isn’t the most exciting news for non-soccer (I’m sorry mum) fans, he wouldn’t be alone in this endeavor I am calling “notable Americans buying up football clubs of various sizes, value and division” (see Michael B Jordan buying Bournemouth already in the Premier League but a less storied team and Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buying Wrexham which is fourth division so I mean who knows what their plans are there).
Unfortunately, I am not a sports writer, and I have been gone from my own country and the United States for ten years, so I was preoccupied with Tom Brady’s wrist.
At the Saturday match between Birmingham City and Leeds United, a fan was seen wearing a Rolex that wasn’t on the menu: an Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in Rolex Everose gold, often known as the “Emoji” or “Jigsaw” watch. This watch has everyone wondering whether there’s something in the water at Rolex HQ. When it was shown at Watches & Wonders earlier this year, I was pretty like of it, however I believe I’d choose for yellow or white gold (like John Mayer, obviously!). From @polachecksjewelers in Calabasas, California, Brady bought an Everose “Emoji” watch.
At 12 o’clock, where the day would normally be, is a disc with seven positive words: “Happy,” “Eternity,” “Gratitude,” “Peace,” “Faith,” “Love,” and “Hope.” The time of day is no longer shown in the date window at three o’clock; instead, one of 31 emojis is displayed. Among them are the Rolex crown, the peace symbol, the heart, the kissy face, the four-leaf clover, and the eight ball.
The dials of the white gold and yellow gold versions use turquoise as the primary color, while the Everose version has orange (similar to Brady’s) as the primary color. The dials of both watches have a colorful jigsaw pattern. Ten indices made from baguette-cut sapphires in a variety of colors complete the puzzle. Each wears a bracelet with the likeness of the President.
